ABSTRACT:
Urinary Tract Infection and associated complications are acute life-threatening conditions that may arise in patients due to lack of proper care as well as due to inadequate knowledge of the staff nurses. Nurses being the primary health care provider should possess competent knowledge and skill to manage such emergencies diligently in the wards. An experimental study was conducted to see the effectiveness of self-instructional module on the knowledge level of the staff nurses about the indwelling catheter care in Cancer hospital & research Institute,Gwalior.Purposive techniques was used to allocate the subjects. The study was conducted on 50 nurses working in Cancer hospital & research Institute, Gwalior. With the help of review of literature Callista Roy’s conceptual framework was implicated in the study. Researcher used structured questionnaire to assess the knowledge level of staff nurses regarding indwelling catheter care , that was validated by 6 experts in nursing and medical field. Reliability of the tool was calculated by split half method was found r=0.83.Data has been analyzed by using both descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results:
· The mean score of the participants obtained for the level of knowledge in pre test was 24.64 and standard deviation was 5.71
· The improved mean score for level of knowledge in post test was 41.06 and standard deviation was 4.96
· The effectiveness of self instructional module is 15.36
· The coefficient of co relation came out to be 0.16 which indicates positive co-relation
· It is recommended that staff nurses should be provided in service education.

INTRODUCTION:
Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are the most common infections acquired in hospitals and long-term care facilities. A urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by an indwelling catheter is called a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). CAUTIs are common and can be treated with antibiotics.
Symptoms are:
· Pain or burning in the lower abdomen or groin
· Fever
· Burning while urinating
· Frequent or strong urges to urinate
· Cloudy or abnormal urine color
· Blood in the urine
· Strong or foul urine odor
· Pressure, pain, or spasms in the lower belly or back.
Risk factors are prolonged use of a urinary catheter and leaving a catheter in place continuously. Prevention includes clean insertion and removal techniques, Daily catheter care, removing catheters as soon as possible, and using intermittent catheterization instead of an indwelling catheter.1,2
Treatment options includes Antibiotics for symptomatic patients, Replacement of the catheter when treatment begins and Culture and sensitivity testing to determine the most effective antibiotic.3,4,5
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY:
· To evaluate how much staff nurses know about the care of indwelling catheter .
· To impart knowledge to staff nurses regarding the care of indwelling catheter.
· To reduce the occurrence of urinary tract infections arising due to improper care and management due to lack of knowledge.
· To promote the quality of indwelling catheter care rendered to the patients by the nurses.
· To enhance the level of well being of the indwelling catheter patients.6,7,8,9,10
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY:
· To acknowledge the pre-test scores of nurses regarding knowledge of indwelling catheter care.
· To find out post test scores of nurses regarding the knowledge of indwelling catheter care.
· To assess the effectiveness of self instructional module on indwelling catheter care.
· To find out co-relation between pre-test and post test knowledge scores of staff nurses regarding indwelling catheter care.
The conceptual framework for the present study is based on the system model (Roy’s Adaptation Model) for evaluation of nurse’s knowledge regarding indwelling catheter care.11,12,13
METHODS AND METHODOLOGIES:
The objective of the methodology section is to promulgate to readers what the researcher did, to solve the research problem or to answer the research question. This section deals with the major methodological decision and often offers rationales for those decisions.
RESEARCH APPROACH:
Keeping in view the need to see the effectiveness of program and the objective of the study “Evaluative
Research Approarch” was found to be most appropriate.
RESEARCH DESIGN:
In the present study single group pre test post test design was used.

The above table shows that there is a co-relation between the pre test and post test knowledge scores of staff nurses regarding indwelling catheter care.
CONCLUSION:
It was concluded that nurse’s knowledge about indwelling catheter care is vague or in determinant. This was found out from the pre test conducted by the researcher in which no participant could score predominantly. But after the administration of self instructional module on indwelling catheter carethe result shown by staff nurses in post test of the same items was outstanding .This expressed that there was increase in knowledge level of participants. In hospitals it is required that sufficient knowledge must be rendered to staff nurse for catering quality care to patients.
